In this activity, students design tests for a provided Java class before the class methods are constructed using a process called test-driven development. To create a design, the software/system design process, which is a specific case of the engineering design process, is followed. After students create a design, it is implemented and tested and if necessary, the design undergoes editing to make sure it functions by testing the Java class correctly. This seminar is open to graduate students, and is intended to offer a synoptic view of selected methodologies and thinkers in art history (with some implications for architecture). It is a writing-intensive class based on the premise that writing and editing are forms of critical thinking. The syllabus outlines the structure of the course and the readings and Assignments and Labs for each week. The discipline of art history periodically surges into crisis." The demise of formalism as a guiding tenet, or connoisseurial appreciation as a general guide, plunged the field into confusion during the 1970s when the battle raged over "social histories of art" or "revisionism;" in the late 1990s the debate was staged between "visual studies" versus "normative art history." The course takes this confusion as itself worthy of study, and seeks to make available some of the new methodologies that have emerged over the past two decades. The ultimate goal is to bring students closer to discovering their own individual methods and voices as writers of art historical prose. In broader terms, we will attempt to understand the historiography of visual art and images more broadly. Our efforts will be predicated on the conviction that art history can serve as a generative discipline for all humanistic disciplines, and even those that style themselves as "Bildwissenschaft" (or "image-science")."

Computability Theory deals with one of the most fundamental questions in computer science: What is computing and what are the limits of what a computer can compute? Or, formulated differently: "What kind of problems can be algorithmically solved?" During the course this question will be studied. Firstly, the notion of algorithm or computing will be made precise by using the mathematical model of a Turing machine. Secondly, it will be shown that basic issues in computer science, like "Given a program P does it halt for any input x?" or "Given two program P and Q, are they equivalent?" cannot be solved by any Turing machine. This shows that there exist problems that are impossible to solve with a computer, the so-called "undecidable problems".

In this engineering unit, students are developing background knowledge on heat, heat transfer and conservation. While this unit can be a stand-alone exercise, it has been designed to provide a way for students to gather data and derive evidence-based conclusions to help them choose the best materials to use in a science class solar cooker project. Students build cardboard houses to explore the movement and conservation of heat energy. A heat source is placed inside the house and students use vernier temperature probes and graphing software to gather and tabulate temperature data. Each house is standard, so that the students understand that we are all gathering data in a consistent way. Students must calculate percentage of wall space given to doors and windows. Students will compare data from team to team, examining heat loss as recorded by temperature differences as a function of window and door areas. Students will cover doors and windows with various materials, examining different insulating qualities. Students will examine the effect on temperature of different colors of wall surface on the interior of the house. After gathering data, students will work to draw conclusions from the gathering of data. Students will construct charts and tables to tabulate data by hand, then will transfer data to Excel spreadsheets if technology is available.

Doelstelling van dit college is een introductie te geven in de theorie van de Thermodynamica, een van de fundamentele werktuigbouwkunde vakken. De Thermodynamica behandelt energie vraagstukken en relaties tussen de eigenschappen van materialen. In dit college wordt voor een ingenieurs aanpak van de Thermodynamica gekozen: onderwerp van studie zijn systemen en hun interactie met de omgeving. Naast gesloten systemen krijgen open systemen veel aandacht. Thermodynamica wordt, in combinatie met stromingsleer en warmte- en stofoverdracht, ingezet om bijvoorbeeld automotoren, turbines, compressoren, pompen, elektriciteit opwekkinginstallaties, cryogenische-, koel- en klimaat-installaties en duurzame energieconversie installaties te analyseren en ontwerpen. De beginselen van de Thermodynamica maken het mogelijk om de ontwerpen van energie gerelateerde werktuigbouwkundige apparaten en systemen te optimaliseren voor het betreffende doel.

Enkele voorbeelden van toestandsvergelijkingen worden behandeld (de viriaal vergelijking, vergelijkingen met twee constanten en vergelijkingen met meerdere constanten). De grootheden Helmholtz energie en Gibbs energie worden geintroduceerd. De Gibbs vergelijking is de basis om tot een beschrijving van evenwichten (van mengsels) te komen. De condities van evenwicht van pure componenten en van mengsels wordt afgeleidt. Uitgaande van de totale differentialen worden partiele afgeleide uit gedrukt in termen van thermodynamische grootheiden. Voor de berekening van processen, zo als compressie, expansie enz worden uitdrukkingen afgeleid voor delta h, delta s en delta u (waarbij delta voor de deviatie="departure" van ideaal gas gedrag staat). Het wordt getoond hoe deze uitdrukkingen (of dimensieloze diagrammen van deze grootheden) voor de berekening van processen gebruikt kunnen worden. Ook wordt de grootheid exergie gepresenteerd, een grootheid die gebaseerd is op de tweede hoofdwet van de thermodynamica, tezamen met enkele nuttige grootheden en hulpmiddelen voor het uitvoeren van exergie analyses (exergie verlies, exergie rendementen, waardediagram). In dit college wordt de definitie van exergie beperkt tot de thermo-mechanische exergie. Het principe van het stoomturbine kringproces wordt getoond en mogelijkheden voor de optimalisatie van dit kringproces worden besproken, zoals de keuze van stoomdruk en -temperatuur en de toepassing van stoomoververhitting en -herverhitting.

The aim of this video is to support students in visualizing the conversion of energy and its importance in real world applications. For this reason, everyday examples are used to help students see the conversion of energy around them. Energy conversion is explored through a simple example of generating electricity for lighting up a shadow puppetry play in a village. The chain process of energy conversion is illustrated until the end product of electricity. This example of electricity generation is further illustrated in an actual industrial setting by taking the viewers to a Power Plant, where viewers will see and hear the explanation of a mechanical engineer on the equipment used to produce electricity that we use in homes and businesses. This important concept of energy conversion is crucial for students to understand as a basis for learning other concepts in Thermodynamics.
