LilyTiny Plush Monsters Are Alive!

Students learn how to set up pre-programmed microcontroller units like the Arduino LilyPad and use them to enhance a product’s functionality and personality. They do this by making plush toys in monster shapes (template provided) with microcontrollers and LEDs sewn into the felt fabric with conductive thread to make circuits. At activity end, each student will have created his or her own plush toy, complete with LEDs that illuminate in a specified sequence: random twinkle, blink, heartbeat and/or breathing.

Student groups are challenged to program robots with light sensors to follow a black line. Learning both the logic and skills behind programming robots for this challenge helps students improve their understanding of how robots "think" and widens their appreciation for the complexity involved in programming LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT robots to do what appears to be a simple task. They test their ideas for approaches to solve the problem and ultimately learn a (provided) working programming solution. They think of real-world applications for line-follower robots that use sensor input. A PowerPoint® presentation and pre/post quizzes are provided.

We believe the entire book can be taught in twenty five 50-minute lectures to a sophomore audience that has been exposed to a one year calculus course. Vector calculus is useful, but not necessary preparation for this book, which attempts to be self-contained. Key concepts are presented multiple times, throughout the book, often first in a more intuitive setting, and then again in a definition, theorem, proof style later on. We do not aim for students to become agile mathematical proof writers, but we do expect them to be able to show and explain why key results hold. We also often use the review exercises to let students discover key results for themselves; before they are presented again in detail later in the book.

Welcome to this online course on Linear Algebra.

Linear Algebra is a branch of mathematics that plays a fundamental to role in many parts of Science and Engineering, such as Quantum Mechanics, Coding Theory, Signal Processing and Control Theory .

As Linear Algebra is a common component of many university programmes in Science or Engineering, this course can be used as additional study or preparation for on campus courses on Linear Algebra. Please note that we cannot guarantee that this course can replace an on campus course.

The course has no preliminaries other than basic high school mathematics. Furthermore, the course is self contained; it can be studied without extra resources. Nevertheless, for each topic you can find some references to standard literature that you can consult for further reading.
