Smithsonian National Zoo and Defined Tasks

The Smithsonian National Zoo has a program called Conservation Classroom.  The program involves four steps: Wonder, Engage, Act, and Connect.  In the Wonder part of the program, students watch a video to hook them.  The Engage part of the program consists of a live virtual program with options to watch a recorded session.  During the Engage session, students interact with real-world experts and participate in an activity (the Act). Students can share their work with the Smithsonian's National Zoo after the event.  In the Connect part of the program, students extend their learning and make career connections.

On May 22, students can engage in the program with a focus on Exploring Neighborhood Birds. During the session, students will learn about techniques used to study birds such as bird banding from a migratory bird ecologist.

This is a perfect way to "hook" students before they participate in a Defined Learning task. Check out the Refuge Ranger: Birds tasks for grades 6-8 that aligns well with this program.

The Conservation Classroom program occurs monthly. Check out some of the past programs to engage your students before or during a Defined task.

The Aquatic Animal Adventures aligns well with the Project Manager: Building an Aquatic Habitat task.

We would love to hear how you are using supplemental materials with your Defined Learning tasks.
