National Engineers Week (Feb. 18-24)

by Lynn Erickson 5 months, 1 week ago

National Engineers Week is next week and the goal of the week is to increase understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers.

Defined Learning is a great place to do just that.  In the Computer Science and STEM course library, you will find a series of courses that include engineering tasks for K-2, 3-5, middle school and high school.

Some of my favorites are:

K-2- Robot Engineer- students use the design process to create a robot that can solve a problem

K-2 Make Your Own Music- students will design and construct a musical instrument that should make sound in two different ways.

3-5 Toy Designer- students will work on a toy design team that will design a new toy that uses some kind of physical science such as balance or magnets.

3-5 Park Designer- students will design a new park for the local community that includes areas and structures that will be fun for young kids, teens and adults.

Middle School Backpack Designer- students have the opportunity to understand criteria and constraints in order to design a solution to meet the needs of a specific audience or customer.

Middle School Tiny House Designer- students have the opportunity to understand criteria and constraints of a design and how to develop solutions in a systematic process

High School Shoe Designer- students design and develop shoes using artistic talent combined with research and engineering to create appealing and functional footwear.

High School Transportation Engineer: Wildlife Crossing and Genetic Connectivity- students have the opportunity to do a biological assessment of a region and design a solution to minimize the environmental impact from road structures designed by humans.

We would love to see what you do during Engineers Week. Please share the Defined Learning engineering task you did with your students during or after the week.
