My 5th graders are really enjoying the Backpack Designer blueprint design product/task. I am piloting this unit with all 6 of my classes. It's week 3 and everyone is engaged. This unit is STEAM at its best - the students are drawing, researching, measuring, etc. My students really benefited from watching the PBS Design Process video that was included in the resources tab (Optional Research Resources); it elevated their creativity, tool use, collaboration, etcbackpack design. Next week we will use our makerspace materials to create backpack protypes.

This is so exciting. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep us posted on their prototypes and feel free to post pictures of their work. I can see why they are so engaged in the process.

Carrie, these look great! I'm just seeing these now and it must be week 4 or 5 for the backpack task. Are they working on the prototypes?

Backpack is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES too!! I'll share a few pictures from my 4th graders below.

As I shared with Carrie and everyone, Backpack is my absolute favorite task. I do enjoy the Classroom Designer or Architect too. I enjoy it because my students are engaged and "run" with the task. I used this task for a library space in our building that the school wanted to redesign into a new innovative space that is perfect for STEAM. The students enjoyed every second of it they did an awesoem job presenting to the school board too!!!

I am currently in the process of working on the Magnet Engineer task with grade 3. They are in the beginning stages of brainstorming problems and solutions to those problems that integrate magnets.  I am so excited to see what kind of prototypes they create next week.  Stayed tuned for pictures and examples.

Here are some pictures of our Magnet Engineer task with a grade 3 class. Students created prototypes of products that could help someone. Some of the problems they came up with were not being able to pick something up, not having items easily accessible when someone is in a wheelchair, staying organized, and helping someone get out of wheel chair easier.  The following pictures are examples of the prototypes students designed that included magnets.
